Means fair or foul

Breeding season for us ‘week-end hatchery guys’, brings on some peculiar behaviour. We go fishing with toolboxes, brush-cutters, wire cages, cleaning equipment, poles, thermometers and the like. And on many trips we don’t get to fish at all. But we still have a lot of fun.
While we catch most of our brood fish fairly, and on fly, it is silently acknowledged that to trap them is equally honourable. This requires a good fish trap in the feeder stream.

  1. Not sure what is happening here. Are the trapped fish then taken for stocking in a larger water, and who’s responsible for the work, a local fish commission?

    1. We run a small hatchery for the purposes of re-stocking our artificial lakes each year. To collect hens and cocks to strip, we fly-fish for them, as well as trap them in the feeder streams. Then we transport them live to a small hatchery facility where we strip the eggs, fertilise and hatch them out for re-stocking. The trapped fish are returned live to the lakes. Because it is a week-end hobby on private waters, we are not able to keep brood stock permanently, hence the need to trap and collect brood fish each season. It is a private, non profit endeavour by a few committed fly-fishermen.
