Waters & words : a celebration of flyfishing

Highmoor memoir

Highmoor is a wonderful fly-fishing location. It sits high up above the  top of the first line of cliffs forming part of the Drakensberg range (known as the”little berg”)  at the source of the Little Mooi river.  I have been fishing it for many years, and visits there are always a minor pilgrimage. A recent trip inspired this amateur clip.

    Hi Andrew,

Wow what a great clip and certainly brought back some fantastic memories. From “Got One!” to trying to chase a Rinkhals away from my flippers to the late great Jack Blackman making me run over a rabbit so we could tie some gold ribbed har’s ear nymphs with the fur!

Do you remember the chap who was fascinated with our caps which probably held more flies than Kings and The Flyfisherman put together. Brett may remember arriving on a fishing weekend where we only had 4 cases of beer and 3 tomatoes!

I think it is time I started fishing again!

    • Three tomatoes! no ways…we were poor remember: can’t have been more than two.

      Great memories!

  3. From my friend Brett:

    Hi Andrew,
Just watched your You-tube montage of Highmoor over the years. Brings back many fond memories. Jacqui and I also recalled a particular fishing trip to the top dam which ended abruptly with the usual thunder storm at the end of the day.
The storm was followed by a dense mist that descended on us before we had a chance to gather our gear and get everyone off the lake. Somehow we made it back to the car. We then waited almost an hour for Conrad to show. Another hour of calling and flashing torches in the dark ended in success when we found Conrad staggering treacherously close to the edge of the stream ravine, lighting his way with a one inch candle stub!
His glasses were misted up by the fog and he was horribly lost.
    What a day!
